In Johnson County, Hardin worked on a farm, taught school and married Susan Cordelia Adams, a former student. The young couple settled on a farm near Cleburne, soon becoming parents of a girl whom they named Dovie. In 1879, 哈丁全家搬到了克莱县北部(后来的威奇托县)，夫妇俩在那里以每英亩一美元的价格购买了一块127英亩的宅基地，靠近后来的伯克伯内特, Texas.
